Zanzibar conjures up images of an exotic spice island, cloaked in history and mystic. This trip takes you to a land of white sandy beaches, beautiful atolls bursting with marine life and the enchanting, historic centre of Stone Town.
The earliest visitors to Zanzibar were Arab traders who used the island to store ivory, slaves and spices. The Arabic influence can be seen all over the island and the local language, Swahili is derived from the Arabic word, sawahil meaning "coast".
Upon arrival in Zanzibar you will be met at the airport and transferred to your resort. It will feel as if you have been transported back in time as you leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city and enter the lush vegetation and spice plantations that have attracted visitors to the island for hundreds of years. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing before you begin diving the following morning.\r\nMatemwe Beach Village and Ras Nungwi are located on the north east side of the island which provides easy access to the Nmemba Atoll. A leisurely trip on a traditional dhow will drop you on the edge of the reef which is well known for its turtles and the large schools of fish.
The dive sites of the east coast are less well known and still being explored. These reefs are accessible from Breezes and Paul, who runs the Rising Sun Dive Centre, is a keen photographer who is always keen to pass on tips to fellow enthusiasts.
The beaches associated to these resorts are private and are perfect to soak up the sun or take an afternoon stroll.
During your stay why not take a trip around the island to learn more about the spice plantations, slave trade and Stone Town?
At the end of your trip you will be transferred to the airport to catch your flight home. Alternatively, extend your stay and go on safari.
